Rebecca Poling, D.D.S., M.S.D.

President and Founder of the International Training Institute

Dr. Rebecca Poling graduated from dental hygiene at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and attended Johns Hopkins University with course work toward her MPH. She taught dental students management of expanded function auxiliaries for two years at the dental school at the University of Maryland.

She then moved to Alaska and developed and directed the Dental Hygiene Program at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Then and now, this program continues to be one of the top dental hygiene programs in the US as indicated by outstanding scores on the Dental Hygiene National Boards.

After that, she attended dental school at the University of Washington in Seattle and she received her dental degree and her orthodontic degree. She was President of her dental school Senior Class and involved in the Dental School's Curriculum Committee as a student representative.

In the 1980s she returned to Anchorage and established her orthodontic practice. Dr. Poling developed an oral hygiene program for the Anchorage Dental Society that was given by dentists in 54 elementary schools in Anchorage from 1986 through 1989. She was also a Commissioner on the Anchorage Health and Human Services Commission from 1989 until 1991.

In 1995 Dr. Poling achieved Board Certification from the American Board of Orthodontics. She is past president of the Alaska State Society of Orthodontists and past Director from Alaska on the Board of Directors of the PCSO. From 1999 until 2002 she was the PCSO representative on the American Association of Orthodontists Council of Orthodontic Practice and involved in the Transition Seminar and the Orthodontist as CEO program. She became an Active member of the Northwest Angle Society and Chair of the PCSO Continuing Education Committee.

Dr. Poling has published in the Journal of Dental Education and in the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. She has also been a contributing author to the text Surgical Orthodontic Treatment by Drs. Proffit and White. She lectured frequently to orthodontic residents on "Finishing" and has lectured on staff training at regional, national, and international meetings.

She was on the orthodontic faculty at the University of the Pacific from 2005 to 2006. Dr. Poling was also orthodontic faculty at New York University College of Dentistry and at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Adolescent Health Center.  She trained at these institutions predoctoral dental students, orthodontic residents, pediatric dentistry residents, International dentists, and staff.

In 1998 Dr. Poling started the International Training Institute (ITI) for providing excellent clinical training for dental and orthodontic staff using multimedia animations, close-up video, online testing, clinical performance checklists, and other digital technology for delivery of training via the Internet. ITI Courses are used worldwide to teach dental professionals to perform clinical procedures with the highest standard of quality. The module, "Basic Oral Hygiene" was a winner in the American Dental Educators Association Technology Competition in 2002.

Dr. Poling lived in Manhattan from 2010 until August 2017 where she was full-time faculty in the Department of Orthodontics at New York University College of Dentistry. She was Director of the Predoctoral Invisalign Clinic where dental students provided limited orthodontic treatment to their own patients under the supervision of orthodontic faculty and orthodontic post-graduate residents. Dental students learned how to perform all orthodontic procedures from specialy designed interactive multimedia presentations with embedded quiz questions and learning assessment with Knowledge Quizzes. Student learning was tracked and documented using SCORM cloud data analysis. When students passed the online training and demonstrated knowledge retention, they were allowed to perform the procedure in clinic under the supervision of faculty who had also completed the standardized training. Surveys of dental students confirmed that they thoroughly enjoyed this method of learning and then immediately "doing" the procedure in clinic.

In August 2017 Dr. Poling decided to "retire" from teaching and moved to Raleigh, North Carolina, to be closer to her children. In November 2017 she became a grandmother with the birth of her granddaughter.

Dr. Poling continues to consult as Faculty for Align Technology, Inc. She is active in setting up online and hands-on training programs for institutions and clinics around the world. Dr. Poling has continued interest in improving education through the application of teaching methods based on the neuroscience of learning.

Dr. Poling can be contacted at Dr. Rebecca Poling, Consultant, LLC, located at the same phone contact as the International Training Institute.
